“We are treating this matter very seriously,” said a government spokesperson.
Polish authorities said Sunday they were investigating a possible attempt to attack the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Writing on X, interior ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka said Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Special Services Minister Coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak had ordered measures to be taken following a “possible assassination attempt on the Prime Minister … as well as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense.”
Officials from the police service, the government’s protection service and the Internal Security Agency held an emergency meeting Sunday at the agency’s counterterrorism center to discuss the situation.
Following the meeting, Jacek Dobrzynski, Siemoniak’s spokesperson, told reporters that authorities are “treating this matter very seriously.”
“Month after month, year after year, more and more threats and worrying messages are reaching the police ,” he said. “In this case, we are talking about a strong probability that these threats could have been acted upon.”
No further details on the alleged plot were released and it remains unclear who might be behind it.
Poland has been on the frontline of Russia’s hybrid war against Ukraine’s backers in Europe, and has suffered cyberattacks which have been attributed to Moscow.
In recent weeks, Poland has also seen a wave of violent incidents in schools, including the death of a school caretaker in a knife attack.
