Novak Djokovic beats Marin Cilic in record-breaking battle of veterans

On his return to action a month on from the US Open, Novak Djokovic battled past Marin Cilic (7-6, 6-4) to reach the third round of the Shanghai Masters. With a combined age of 75 (38 and 37 respectively), the two veterans played out the oldest matchup in the history of Masters tournaments.

The second round in Shanghai also served up a tough draw for Taylor Fritz, who rallied from a set down to beat Fabian Marozsan (2-6, 7-6, 7-6) and set up a third-round tie against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

In French football, Marseille could temporarily go top of Ligue 1 with what would be a fourth win on the bounce in all competitions against Metz on Saturday. Across the Channel, Manchester United are aiming to bounce back from yet another defeat as they host Sunderland at Old Trafford, while Liverpool will also look to get back on track when they take on Chelsea in the evening.
